CINDERFORD’S players deserve all the credit they get for winning the National Two South title with a record number of points, says director of rugby Paul Morris.

Morris says The Foresters proved their credentials as champions by coming from behind to beat Bury St Edmunds 24-19 as they trailed into the game’s final quarter.

And the Dockham Road side’s first trophy-winning coach in over a decade admitted it could have been easy to let this week’s result slide knowing second-placed Chinnor were on their way to a 52-29 defeat at Canterbury.

“Bury St Edmunds were very keen to let us know over the tannoy that Chinnor were in a lot of trouble,” Morris said.

“The players could have said okay, it’s not our week, we’ll let the result slide but they’re not like that.

“The last 19 minutes of that game showed why we are worthy champions. We were unrelenting.

“It’s been hard work to win this league. It’s been coming for a while.

“We believe we are the best side in this league and if not the best, then the most consistent.

“The stats bore that out and no matter what happens on Saturday against Canterbury, we will have won this league with a record number of points.

“We have the best home record, best away record, best defensive record and most points scored.

“We’ve gone 23 games unbeaten since we lost to Chinnor on October 7 which was hugely disappointing.

“Since then, with each week the pressure has grown but the players have lived it and dealt with it.

“I cannot give them enough credit, they have been amazing.

“It was a dark period in April 2016 when we were relegated from National League One. The club could have crumbled.

“But we rebuilt it as a place to come and be and it has been great to see the connection between the players and the supporters, who have played a big part in the success.”
