HARTPURY RFC suffered another disappointing Championship defeat as Dean Adamson scored a hat-trick to inspire Bedford Blues to a 45-21 victory at Goldington Road on Saturday.

The visitors made a promising start and twice held the lead during a competitive first half, but Bedford's attacking quality eventually proved decisive.

Hartpury scored three tries through Charlie Powell, Harry Short and Keir Clark, with Harry Bazalgette converting all three.

However, four unanswered second-half tries helped Bedford secure their third successive bonus-point victory and condemn Hartpury to another frustrating afternoon.

The hosts opened the scoring after eight minutes when Ben Dufficy finished an attacking move involving Alex Day and Marcus Kershaw, with Michael Le Bourgeois converting.

Hartpury responded six minutes later through Powell, who collected an excellent crossfield kick from Bazalgette before crossing in the corner.

Bazalgette added the conversion to level the scores at 7-7.

The visitors continued to threaten and took the lead in the 23rd minute when Short finished a powerful driving maul.

Another successful conversion from Bazalgette established a 14-7 advantage as Hartpury looked capable of securing an important away victory.

However, Bedford responded through Craig Wright, who crossed following a quickly taken penalty in the 33rd minute.

Adamson then scored his first try shortly before half-time, cutting inside the Hartpury defence to give the hosts a narrow 17-14 interval lead.

Despite trailing, Hartpury remained firmly in contention after an encouraging opening period.

The second half proved considerably more difficult as Bedford introduced experienced replacements and began dominating possession and territory.

Adamson scored his second try in the 51st minute following an excellent offload from Kershaw, with replacement fly-half Will Maisey converting.

Five minutes later, Louis James crossed for Bedford's fifth try after further attacking pressure, extending the hosts' advantage to 31-14.

Hartpury struggled to establish a foothold as Bedford continued to control proceedings, repeatedly forcing the visitors into defensive positions.

The home side added another try through Rory Ward in the 68th minute, leaving Hartpury facing an increasingly difficult task.

Adamson completed his hat-trick five minutes later, finishing another flowing attack to put the result beyond doubt.

Maisey converted to extend Bedford's lead to 45-14, completing a devastating second-half display from the hosts.

Hartpury continued battling despite the substantial deficit and were rewarded with a late consolation try from Clark.

The replacement crossed in the closing stages before Bazalgette added his third conversion, reducing the final margin to 24 points.

However, the visitors were unable to prevent Bedford from securing a convincing victory after an evenly contested opening half.

The result continued a difficult start to the Championship campaign for Hartpury, who have faced several demanding fixtures against established opponents.

While their attacking opportunities produced three converted tries, the inability to contain Bedford after the interval ultimately proved costly.

The hosts demonstrated their strength in depth, with replacements making an immediate impact as the contest moved decisively in their favour.

Hartpury will now need to address their second-half defensive difficulties as they seek to improve their league position.

The visitors can nevertheless take encouragement from their first-half display, particularly their ability to respond quickly after conceding the opening try.

Maintaining that intensity throughout matches will be crucial as the Championship season progresses.

Their challenge now is to turn those promising passages into sustained performances against the division's strongest teams.
