DRYBROOK ladies captain Stevie Liddiatt said the Squirrels’ 22-12 win over hosts Guernsey was a great way to end the season – despite being stuck on the Channel Island for an extra day.
Tries from Micha Harris, Kirsty Gwilliam, Michelle Lewis and Bethany Lawrence, plus a conversion from the boot of Dorrie Morley, ensured a tricky campaign ended on a high note for Drybrook.
The Mannings side had not won since November, a dramatic last-ditch 12-10 victory over visitors Guildford, and Liddiatt admitted the club will be on a recruitment drive over the summer to bring in fresh blood.
“It was amazing to win,” she said of the trip to Guernsey.
“They were very welcoming and after that win the team was buzzing.
“It’s a great way to end the season.
“We are going to do a lot of recruitment over the summer – we’ve got the touch sevens and we’ll try to get some new players into women’s rugby.
“We’re very grateful to the club and the fundraisers for helping us get to Guernsey.
“It wasn’t too bad on Sunday being stuck there because of the weather – some of us were able to get to Gatwick and get a transfer from there but not all of us and the club paid for us to stay an extra night.
“But on Monday it was hard and we were there for 28 hours longer than we were supposed to be. We all just wanted to come home!
“There were only two flights out of Guernsey and ours was the second one and that was delayed too so it was an eventful weekend.”
