NEWENT Town have made a strong statement ahead of the new season with the double signing of Tiago Ribeiro and Matty Nest, as preparations continue to build for what promises to be an exciting campaign at Wildsmith Meadow.
Portuguese-born forward Ribeiro brings with him attacking flair and experience from spells at Worcester Raiders and Bewdley Town. Known for his creativity, technical ability and direct style of play, the forward-thinking 23-year-old adds further firepower to the Daffs’ attacking options.
Described by the club as “an attack-minded player with a sharp eye for goal,” Ribeiro is comfortable operating across a range of forward and midfield positions, and is already being tipped to make a big impact in the Hellenic League Division One.
Ribeiro joins a side that is quietly going about its business with purpose this summer, and his arrival follows closely on the heels of another new addition in defender Matty Nest, who put pen to paper earlier this month.
Nest, a highly-rated young centre-back, has already impressed during pre-season with his composed performances and leadership at the back. A graduate of the Droitwich Spa youth system, he captained both U18 and U21 teams during successful campaigns, gaining a reputation as a natural organiser and calm presence under pressure.
The 20-year-old has wasted no time making his mark at Newent, with a standout display in a recent friendly against Tuffley Rovers where he provided a pinpoint assist from deep to set up Dylan Hart’s goal.
The club’s busy summer shows clear intent to improve on last season’s mid-table finish and mount a more consistent push up the table. With both flair and leadership now added to the mix, optimism is building among the Daffs faithful as the countdown to the new season continues.
