NEWENT football club's president was awarded by the Football Association for his long service to the sport, this week. Alan Bassett was given the 'Long Service to Football' award in recognition of his 53 years at Newent Town Association Football Club. Kevin Mason, club chairman, said: "Alan has been made lifetime e president. He joined as a youth player in 1958 and through his career he played for Newent in the North Gloucestershire Senior League and even in the County league. He was Newent's top goal scorer for a couple of years. "He's behind the bar serving drinks at the club and when new people join the club they don't realise at first all that he's done for this club. He keeps it all to himself, he's never been one to boast."
