Lydney won the battle of the Gloucestershire Cricket League first division basement with a 94-run win over local rivals Redmarley.

Set a target of 207, bottom side Redmarley were in all sorts of trouble at 25-6 and despite 61 from opener Ronnie Newbery they never recovered.

Jack O’Connell, Jordan Stone and Callum Miller each took three wickets as the home side moved out of the relegation zone.

Lydney were put into bat and made a strong start with openers Tom Legge and Alex Nelmes making 91 for the first wicket.

Nelmes went for 22 in the 21st over to a catch by Jack Bartlett off the bowling of Sam Mattingley.

Mattingley took the important wicket of Tom Legge four overs later when Charlie Ayland got under a high shot.

Legge was Lydney’s top scorer with 69 that included 11 fours for 112-2.

The home side’s progress was further hampered when Jack Knox was bowled by Ollie Norman for 117-3.

The fourth wicket fell soon afterwards when Dafydd Nicholas went for 19 after being run out.

From 91-1, Lydney were now 125-4.

Dave Kear and Jordan Stone got the scoreboard ticking as they put on 24 for the fifth wicket before Stone was caught by Kevin Trouw off Norman for 15 off 16 balls.

Kear went for 16 after being caught by Mattingley off Bartlett for 167-6.

O’Connell and Tom Hayward then brought Lydney to the 200 mark.

Hayward was caught by Ayland off Bartlett for nine to make it 196-7 midway through the 43rd over.

Bartlett then completed a memorable day with the ball by taking two wickets in the final over.

O’Connell, who had made 24 off 15 balls, including four boundaries, was bowled with second delivery for 201-8.

He repeated the feat with the next ball with William Morris becoming the ninth wicket.

O’Connell opened the bowling for Lydney with a maiden.

He claimed the first wicket in the seventh over, bowling James Holland for four.

Redmarley lost their second wicket in the next over when Kevin Trouw was caught by wicketkeeper Nicholas off the bowling of Callum Miller for 19-2.

Miller made it 20-4 in the 10th, catching Edward Aston leg before with the first delivery and bowling Charlie Ayland with the fifth.

O’Connell compounded the visitors’ misery with two wickets in the next over.

He had Oliver Aston lbw and skipper Andrew Green was caught by Nicholas for 25-6.

Opener Ronnie Newbery had remained solid but he went at the beginning of the 23rd, caught by Hayward off Stone for 61 which included 10 fours.

Redmarley were now 87-7 and it became 89-8 when Mattingley was caught by Nicholas off Knox.

Stone came in to finish off the innings, with catches by William Morris and Miller accounting for Bartlett and Kieran Slatter.

O’Connell finished with 3-23, Stone 3-26 and Miller 3-39.

For Redmarley, Bartlett’s figures were 4-41.
