DRIVING home on Saturday night, Lydney coach Duncan Bell should have been cock-a-hoop after seeing his side win their second game in a row. However, he wasn't.
He said: "I was obviously delighted that we had won but the margin of victory makes it looks like it was close. I thought it was always comfortable and we could have been 25 points up by half-time. We butchered a couple of two-on-ones just by dropping the ball. That should have been 14 points.
"Maybe I'm hyper-critical but I thought we could have won by so much more. Bournemouth had a big pack but we carved them up out wide."
Danny Trigg kicked three penalties for Lydney and also converted a first half penalty-try. Tony Wicks dropped a goal and Matt Taylor broke off the back of a scrum for Lydney's second try.
Bournemouth also managed two tries, one in each half, but they didn't have a kicker as reliable as Trigg.
In the second half it was temporarily 12v14 as two Bournemouth players joined Andy Jarrett in the sin-bin for fighting.
Bournemouth then lost a third player to the bin, allowing Taylor to gain his touchdown.
"Had we been more clinical we could have come away with five points rather than four," said Bell.
"Having said that, there was much to be pleased about. Danny Trigg is someone we can build a team around. He's a very strong all-round player but the thing that has really surprised me about him is how good a tackler he is, he simply knocks everyone down in his path.
"Rugby is a bit like chess in that you don't get checkmate from the first move, you have to work a position to get checkmate. We just need a bit more discipline and patience."
Lydney host Shelford this Saturday with confidence high. And they've two international players waiting in the wings in Ireland under-20s prop Olly Day and Scotland under-20s second-row Sam Thompson, both from the Worcester Academy.
Bell added: "They've both got good pedigrees but I haven't seen enough of them yet to just throw them in."
One player who won't be back is number eight James Tyas (pictured), who came from the Bath Academy. Tyas has now signed a deal to play Championship rugby for Cornish Pirates.
