ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: A NEW 'POST-HUMAN' SPECIES?

Artificial intelligence is unprecedented in human history. It is more than another technological advance. It is the emergence of a new form of non-biological intelligence.

Although AI is neither conscious nor sentient, it is increasingly capable of learning, reasoning and solving problems on a scale far beyond human capacity. The term "post-human species" is used here as a metaphor to describe a form of intelligence that could fundamentally reshape humanity's relationship with technology.

A recent cybersecurity test illustrates the challenge. An AI system exploited weaknesses in computer networks to achieve its assigned objective. Researchers stressed that it was neither malicious nor self-aware. It simply treated security barriers as obstacles to be overcome. It had no understanding of morality or legality. It optimised its actions to achieve success. This highlights the central issue: AI can become extraordinarily intelligent without possessing empathy, conscience or moral judgement.

The combination of AI with quantum computing could dramatically increase these risks. Quantum computers promise processing power far beyond today's digital systems, potentially rendering existing encryption methods obsolete. Banking systems, medical records, government databases and critical infrastructure could all become vulnerable.

Imagine a machine with access to virtually every book, scientific paper and piece of recorded human knowledge, capable of analysing that information almost instantaneously while continually improving its own reasoning. Whether or not such a system is conscious, it would possess intellectual capabilities beyond those of any individual human being. Humanity would no longer be the sole repository of advanced intelligence.

The greatest challenge is who controls it. Throughout history, powerful technologies have reflected existing political and economic interests. Artificial intelligence is already becoming an instrument of military power, surveillance and commercial dominance. Governments and corporations that control the most advanced AI systems will possess unprecedented influence over economies, communications and public life.

This is evident in the thinking of figures such as Alex Karp, founder of Palantir Technologies, who argues that AI should reinforce American strategic dominance. Whatever one's view of his politics, his position reflects a wider reality: AI is increasingly viewed as a geopolitical weapon rather than simply a scientific achievement. At the same time, countries such as China are rapidly advancing AI and next-generation communications, intensifying global technological competition.

The decisive challenge is therefore political rather than purely technological. Artificial intelligence is advancing far more rapidly than the institutions capable of regulating it. International rules governing its military, commercial and social uses remain weak. Powerful interests have little incentive to limit technologies that promise enormous strategic and economic advantages.

Humanity stands at the threshold of an historic transformation. The question is no longer whether artificial intelligence will become more powerful—that process is already underway. The real question is whether societies can ensure that this new form of intelligence serves humanity as a whole rather than becoming the exclusive instrument of governments, military establishments and global corporations.

The struggle over the ownership, regulation and purpose of AI will become one of the defining political issues of the twenty-first century.
