Letter to the Editor: I do not live in London and have no plans to drive there any time soon, so ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) is of little personal interest.

However, in a recent TV interview, MP Mark Harper poured scorn on Sadiq Khan’s ULEZ scheme, claiming it, amongst other things, is “Purely a money-making scheme” and “Science predicts a minimal improvement to air quality”. He explained that as Minister for Transport, he deeply regrets, not having the legal authority, to overturn this policy, which he would otherwise do “without hesitation”.

Now, as I understand it, any legal challenge could only be brought if ULEZ was considered to be against national government policy.

As Mr Harper’s own Conservative government originally implemented a ULEZ policy, any legal challenge would fail.

That’s the real reason he cannot overrule Khan.

What blatant hypocrisy, but entirely in keeping with modern politics..
