I WAS interested to read your article in the Forester, August 7, regarding reports of snake bites.

Of course, as local people are aware, this is not a new problem, indeed over the years many people, including children, plus dogs have been bitten by adders. I am somewhat surprised that there are still no warning signs, particularly for visitors, about these reptiles, since during the summer many people visit the Forest and many of those walk in the Forest wearing no socks or perhaps barefoot. Children and dogs are particularly at risk if they go into bushes or long grass.

I am also concerned to learn from your article that neither the Dilke or Lydney hospitals carry any anti-venom, therefore anyone bitten has to be taken to Gloucester before they can be treated. Can this be more downgrading of our local hospitals, since both these hospitals used to carry anti-venom some years ago?

Finally, may I mention that anyone with heart disease, the very young or elderly people should take great care to avoid being bitten because bites can be more serious in them. It is important that you keep as still as possible and do not panic or run about if you are bitten. You should get medical aid as soon as possible, making sure you mention any treatments such as antibiotics or heart tablets etc that you may be taking.
