AS one of the works reps recently along with 130 others made redundant from The Range at Mitcheldean perhaps I'm in a position to reply to John Belcher's recent letter.

Firstly, as regards the owner of The Range, Chris Dawson, all staff knew he was a focused businessman who is out to make himself a billionaire.

The staff did not even receive a thank you from the man, or were in anyway contacted by him to say sorry for making people redundant, even though his business was expanding.

Secondly, regarding Mark Harper MP, after numerous phone calls and emails to his office, without reply, we felt we had to contact the Prime Minister regarding his non participation to our situation.

Surprisingly enough I then received a letter from Mr Harper explaining what he had done, that is, try to contact Chris Dawson, The Job Centre, Vantage Point owner Mr Bennett (all things we had done as works reps) and if I wanted to attend his next surgery he would let us know how he had got on.

In Mr Harper's defence he has a major job in immigration so should he really represent a constituency like the Forest of Dean?

Thirdly, regarding finding work, I had my first Job Centre meeting where I was told I'd be expected to travel 90 minutes either way for work.

Now, if I started work at 6am for a morning shift I'd have to get up at 4am, finish at 2pm and arrive home at 3.30pm.

With most being paid minimum wage (£6.19) and with petrol over £1.30 a litre I personally don't find those prospects very attractive.

The Forest of Dean leaders need to realise the area needs work whether its an Asda, Tesco or some large industry before the Forest becomes a green desert and a nice place to retire too.

I left some good mates and workers behind at Mitcheldean. Like me they want to work and unless people like Amanda Watkins and John Belcher are listened to then it will only get worse.

Had my say, thanks to all that have supported us at The Range. I'd better start looking for work.
