Celebrities Rory McGrath and Will Mellor will be trying for a new world onion eating record in Newent on Saturday.

Channel 4 and Channel 5 are both sending teams to film the popular annual event.

Rory McGrath, Will Mellor and Pixie McKenna are among the celebrities due to attend.

Newent's own Olympic gold medal winner Charlotte Dujardin has said she will also try and drop in.

Channel 5 will be there to film an episode of Rory and Will Champions of the World.

The series shows the pair travelling around the country trying to notch up quirky world records.

But first they will have to beat champion Sean Wozencroft, who in the past has managed to scoff a 7oz onion in 59 seconds.

According to his Facebook site he has managed to shave an astonishing 11 sec off the world record of 45 seconds in training this year.

Comic Rory, who has appeared in programmes such as They Think It's All Over and Will, best known as Gaz in Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, will have to do some serious training to catch up.

Vice chairman Andy Offord said: "It all depends on the growing conditions and last year the onions were very strong so the times were slow.

"We could well see a new world record but how well Rory and Will do depends on whether they have the stomach for it."

Pixie, a doctor who is normally seen on Embarrassing Bodies, will be chomping her way through a 5oz onion in the women's competition for a Channel 4 programme Food Hospital.

The programme is looking at the science behind research which shows onions contain a chemical with blood thinning properties.

The onion eating contest takes place on the main stage at 1pm.

There is also live music, a food festival and civil war re-enactors who appeared on BBC4's Roundheads and Cavaliers.
