Canterbury 11

WHEN you've got a kicker like Brett Turner in your side you've always got a chance of winning a rugby game.

Canterbury scored the only try of the match at a strangely subdued Regentsholme, but four Turner penalties gave Lydney the edge.

"We didn't play anywhere near our potential," said Lydney skipper Will Jones.

"Our performance was flat, but I never felt we were going to lose. It was just frustrating that we kept coughing up ball, slipping off tackles and didn't have any pattern to our play.

"The good thing is we won. We didn't play well against Shelford either, but we managed to win that one too."

Lydney led 9-6 at the break with three Turner penalties.

The second-half was littered with handling errors from both sides, but Turner's fourth penalty gave Lydney a 12-6 cushion.

Canterbury's backs looked the livelier and Mike Melford raced beyond Lydney's defence to provide Matt Sheen with a touchdown. Crucially, Best missed the conversion.

Melford almost gave Canterbury the lead as he chased a kick from Gert de Kock, but the boot of Matt Taylor saved Lydney.

Good defending from the hosts, particularly up front, saw Lydney through a tense finale.

Skipper Jones added: "We've got to play better against Dings this week. Brett's kicking well and we hope he stays in form.

"Up front, I think we can compete with anyone in this league. The thing we have to watch is containing sides with nippier backs."
