SEVERE weather has caused chaos on the district’s roads this morning with commuters facing huge delays en route to work.

The well-used A40 Highnam Roundabout has seen tailbacks as far back as five miles into Huntley as congestion going into and out of Gloucester has been caused by flooded roads.

The 24 bus, leaving Mitcheldean at 9.10am, took an hour and a half to get to Churcham due to the delays despite being due in at the city at 9.44am.

Buses from Newent, the 32 and 132 services, were severely delayed, as well as the 33 service from Ross-on-Wye.

There were also delays due to surface water on the M50 near Ross.

The B4125 between Newent and Highleadon was described as ’just passable’ at 10am by traffic watchdogs due to flooding, and Elton Corner – the junction between Cinderford, Newnham-on-Severn and Westbury-on-Severn – was also flooded and caused two mile tailbacks to Newnham.

The Old Severn Crossing from near Chepstow to Aust was also closed due to strong winds, causing congestion on the Wye Valley Link Road.A fallen tree had blocked the scenic route leading to Blackpool Bridge between Soudley and Blakeney.
