CINDERFORD Town's first pre-season friendly resulted in a 4-1 win over Northern Senior League outfit Soudley at The Causeway on Tuesday night.
For new Town manager Steve Peters the game provided food for thought.
He said: "We could have scored more goals but we were rusty. It was a typical first friendly, we used 18 or 19 players and chopped and changed. We weren't polished but it was a good workout. We've had seven or eight training sessions but there's nothing like playing matches.
"Soudley worked very hard and brought a lot of supporters, full credit to them. The pitch was fantastic and I think they enjoyed playing on it."
Peters is hoping to step things up in the coming weeks, starting with Tuffley Rovers, away, on Saturday (3pm). Next Tuesday, Shortwood United come to The Causeway (7.30pm).
The Foresters have agreed a link-up with Gloucester City which could see several players signing dual registrations.
"We won't lose all our best players, more than likely it will mean us taking some of the guys on the fringes of their team," said Peters.
The likes of Dan Lee, Michael Whittington and former Almondsbury centre-half Dale Peckham had their first run outs in a Town shirt on Tuesday night, but Peters now faces a battle to bring Jordan Tillson to the club.
The youngster, released by Bristol Rovers last term, played for the Nike Academy against Celtic on Saturday and is attracting interest from league clubs.
Peters is confident, however, that if Tillson doesn't get a pro deal he'll be at Cinderford.
Former skipper Peter Macklin won't be coming back though, having signed for Hungerford Town.
Peters says one player delighting him at the moment is Andy Lewis.
He said: "Andy did well last season but I think there's even more to come.
"He's the fittest player we've got by a mile, if he didn't play football he could be an athlete.
"He's comfy on the ball, can play in a number of positions and he now feels settled at the club."
