A LORRY crashed into a car in Newent, just weeks after residents raised concerns about heavy vehicles travelling through the town.
The accident caused gridlock in the centre of town, much to the annoyance of drivers caught up in it.
An elderly man's parked car on Broad Street was struck by the lorry as it turned into Culver Street at around 1.45pm on August 16. The man was shaken up, but not injured.
Witness at the scene, Margaret Prince, said that the road was not wide enough for long lorries and that she was 'not surprised an accident had occurred'.
Local resident Colin Thomas added: "They should be stopped using it as a rat run before something more serious happens.
"Lorries using Culver Street as a rat run is very fast becoming an issue with residents of Culver Street and in Newent as a whole. It seems that it is only a matter of time before something serious happens. This road and the rest of it across to Huntley is not in any way wide enough."
