SAFETY fears have been raised over Lydney's newest roundabout because motorists keep driving straight over it.

Residents say about a dozen motorists have ploughed into the new roundabout on the Lydney bypass since it opened a few weeks ago.

The roundabout provides the link for the spur road leading to the new Higher Lydney development and is off centre rather than being in the middle of the road.

Councillor James Bevan (Con, Lydney East) saw a car and a lorry drive into the middle of the muddy roundabout within a short time of it opening.

But residents living nearby have told him of other accidents, including on Friday, Saturday and Sunday last weekend. "The approach is so sharp, people are going straight over," he said.

"From what I hear, it could be a dozen accidents, possibly more.

"First we had an estate car taking out the chevron signs, then the lorry hit the flag pole.

"Evidently there were three more over the weekend. Something needs to be done."
