A shoplifter who stole from stores in Lydney and Coleford – and assaulted a shop assistant during one of the offences – was jailed for fourteen days.

At Cheltenham Magistrates’ Court on March 30, Gareth Worth, 30, of Newland Way, Wyesham, in Monmouth, admitted stealing eight bottles of Jack Daniels worth £288 from Coleford Co-op on October 19 last year, groceries of unknown value from Lidl, Coleford, the following day and gin and dishwasher tablets worth a total of £59 from Tesco, Lydney, on December 1.

He also pleaded guilty to assaulting Joanne Edwards by beating at Coleford on October 19th.

The magistrates committed him to prison for 14 days on the grounds that the offence was serious because he was stealing to fund a habit and he had caused injury to a shop assistant.

Worth was also ordered to pay £100 compensation to the assault victim, £59 compensation to Tesco, costs of £85 and a £128 victims services surcharge.
