A MAN has raised concerns over an “eyesore” in Ruardean, following a recent visit.
The visitor was horrified to see what appeared to be a scrapyard set up in the car park area of the locally famous Malt Shovel pub.

The pub is notable as the site where the Horlick family put together the world-famous malt drink. It’s an historic venue, believed to date back to 1110.
According to reports, the pub closed down in 2023 following long-term decline and struggles faced from the coronavirus pandemic years before.

Opposite the pub is Horlick House, which hosts a blue plaque to represent William and James Horlick, who grew up in Ruardean.

The visitor, a descendant of the Horlick family, but did not wish to be named, said: “This should be a heritage site and instead it’s been turned into an eyesore. Surely the people of Ruardean deserve better than this. What’s the District Council doing about it?
“I couldn’t believe it. The pub is derelict and the parking area has been turned into a scrapyard in the middle of the town. It’s an absolute scandal.
“The Forest of Dean should be treasuring its historical sites and not allowing them to fall into such an embarrassing state.”
He added that this was the kind of thing that sometimes gives the Forest of Dean a bad name and could deter investors from the area.

Other visitors have commented on the car park over the years. Reviews of the pub online refer to a “rather bizarre array of vehicles in the car park” with many “rusting relics”.

The Forest of Dean District Council did not address the man’s concerns, explaining they were currently unable to comment further.
A spokesperson for Forest of Dean District Council said: “The council does not own the car park. As this relates to an ongoing enforcement matter, we are unable to comment further at this stage.”
The visitor to the area was so concerned about the car park’s condition, he contacted Forest of Dean’s MP Matt Bishop. The Forester was able to follow-up with the local MP.
Matt Bishop MP told us: “I am aware of the concerns raised about the condition of the Malt Shovel car park and the impact this is having on the local area, particularly given its history and heritage. My office is making enquiries to establish what steps are being taken to address these concerns. I understand that the Forest of Dean District Council is involved and looking at how it can support a resolution, and I have asked to be kept updated on any developments.”
The state of the pub and its car park clearly have had an effect on local people. Social media groups previously called it an “historic and socially important pub” and without it, Ruardean has “lost its heart”.
Attempts were made to contact the current owner of the pub and car park for comment.
The details of the enforcement matter were not confirmed.
