Bottlenecks during rush hour between Highnam and Over, may soon be a thing of the past.

The County Council's Local Transport Board has agreed to fund a major £2.3 million scheme to reduce congestion – adding a third circulating lane to the A40, which will provide two right turn lanes into Gloucester.

Hatched markings just past Highnam Roundabout will be removed.

"I fought my campaign partly on the bottleneck in Gloucester where traffic stretches right out to the Apple Tree in Minsterworth and Churcham School," said councillor Norman Stephens.

"My main campaign issue was to get the hatch markings removed outside Highnam Court. I'm very pleased.

"It's an improvement for everyone and it's really going to help. Common sense has prevailed."

The A40 will be altered to provide three lanes.

The scheme will also signalise entry to the roundabout from Ross-on-Wye.
