FOREST of Dean MP Matt Bishop has paid tribute to former Conservative minister Ann Widdecombe following her death.

Ms Widdecombe, 78, was found dead at her home on Dartmoor on Wednesday. A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody while enquiries continue. Police have said there is no evidence the death was politically motivated.

Mr Bishop described the circumstances surrounding her death as "extremely distressing" and said his thoughts were with her family and loved ones.

He said: "Ann's dedication to public service was decades long, and she was a true servant of her constituents."

Mr Bishop also urged people to avoid speculation and allow the police investigation to progress.
