THE gruesome remains of a family of deer have been found by a member of the public in farm fields between Staunton and Upper Redbrook.

Police are appealing for information following the killing of the deer, as the person came across the horrific scene where heads and limbs of the animals had been cut off and the bodies taken away.

Both young and older adult deer were discovered and police believe it is the work of poachers who have killed the deer and taken the meat to sell.

“This horrific incident has been brought to our attention and we will be investigating,”

Forest of Dean Inspector Steve Chester said.

“These barbaric acts of animal cruelty are totally unacceptable and must be stopped.

“We would be grateful for any help the public can give us to find these poachers.”

Police offer guidance on what to do if the public comes across a wildlife crime in progress or already committed.

Any witnesses should call 999 if a wildlife crime is in progress or 101 if it has already happened, and offer an accurate location where possible without putting themselves or anyone else in danger.

Where possible, witnesses are encouraged to take notes and preserve any evidence before making themselves available to the attending officer.

The incident will then be investigated by rural and environmental crime liason officers.

“We are asking the public to be vigilant in rural locations and report anyone suspicious and take note of suspicious vehicles,” Insp Chester added.
