EMERGENCY services rushed to Lydney Station this lunchtime after a pedestrian was hit by a train at the level crossing.

The casualty, believed to be a woman, was found lying on the track and declared dead at the scene.

People who were at the station said they believed she had been struck by a non-stop train as she walked across the tracks.

The incident, which was reported at 12.46pm, was still being dealt with at 2pm, with Station Road closed to traffic.

A British Transport Police statement said: "Officers were called to Lydney Station at 12.46pm today (Thursday, March 5) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person has been pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are now working to identify the person and inform their family.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

A man posting on the Lydney Notice Board Facebook page said: "Might be wise to avoid Station Road area for a while.

"Seems like an incident on the railway. Lots of blue lights and the level crossing is taped off."

Another man posted: "Someone been hit by train."
