PLANS to build a five bedroom house on the iconic May Hill hillside have divided the village.

Those against have called it 'a scar upon the landscape'.

However, supporters and architects have praised its innovative design.

"It would have a huge impact on the views from the Forest side of May Hill, as it's just above the A40," said Barbara Davis, a member of the Friends of the Dymock Poets.

The house, which would be built on Yartleton Lane, is being billed as a five bedroom 'executive home' and with the accompanying grounds will span 2.6 hectares, around 6.5 acres.

Several letters of objections to the Forest of Dean District Council have said the building plans were 'alien' to May Hill while another said 'we must strive to protect this area of unspoilt beauty'.

The application has also been opposed by the National Trust, who are concerned that granting planning permission would create a precedent for similar developments on May Hill.
