NEWENT Town Council will not support Jacob Van der Lely in his bid to keep 23 mobile homes on a farm in Redmarley Road. Sixty-three people living in mobile homes face eviction after the Forest of District Council evoked an enforcement order on the landowner of Sandyway Nursery. The majority of the residents on site are migrant agricultural workers from Eastern Europe, who are employed at associated businesses not directly linked with Sandyway Nursery. Coun Mary Duncan proposed sending a letter of support from the council for the Van der Lely family, but this was not seconded. She said: "Mr Van der Lely submitted retrospective application for his 23 mobile homes and he has got to go to appeal because it has been turned down. I would like the council to write a letter of support for him to have these caravans there because he is part of the local economy."
