OVER 10,000 people flocked to the 20th edition of the Newent Onion Fayre last weekend.

The world-famous event was the busiest it has ever been with over 180 stalls taking part.

David Blick who opened the fayre this year said that the event has gone from strength to strength.

He said: “A few of us got together 20 years ago and set about restarting the Onion Fayre. The town’s carnival had been dissolved and it was suggested to the town council that restarting the onion fayre would be a good idea.

“The event in 1996 was an absolute unequivocal success. Since then it has grown and grown. We’ve been on Blue Peter, the Paul O’Grady show and there have been numerous TV companies who have hosted food competitions at the event.

“The Onion Fayre has gone from a local event to a worldwide phenomenon."

The current mayor Eddie Wood as well as Peter Pain, Keith Urch and Beryl Reid were also part of the founding committee.

“At the time we had no idea the event was going to be so successful. However we are always looking for new volunteers to get involved.

“The Onion Fayre relies on volunteers. Without all their hard work and support it wouldn’t be possible,” Mr Blick added.

Anyone wishing to get involve can do so by visiting www.newentonionfayre.org .
