A 33-year-old Newent man accused of using controlling and coercive behaviour towards a woman and repeatedly assaulting her has been committed for jury trial at Gloucester Crown Court.

Richard May of Lobelia Row, Newent, pleaded not guilty at Cheltenham Magistrates’ Court on Boxing Day to two charges of assaulting the woman by beating on September 30 and again on November last year in Newent.

He also denied that between June 1 and Christmas Day 2022 he repeatedly or continuously engaged in controlling or coercive behaviour by restricting or removing her access to a phone bank account, socially isolating her, controlling her working pattern, and committing numerous assaults.

The charge alleges that his behaviour had a serious effect on her and he should have known it would do so.

The magistrates remanded May in custody pending his first appearance before the crown court on January 27.
