NEWENT will be the first town in the Forest of Dean district to have its own CCTV system.
Town councillors have backed the installation of a £9,000 state-of-the art wireless system to replace its current network – funding for which is set to be cut by the district council.
Mayor Len Lawton said the cost of the new system would be £9,000 plus VAT.
He said: "It can be up and running by the end of September, and I want a seamless change over when the old system shuts down."
