A navy veteran is to complete the equivalent of five marathons in five days to raise money for Great Oaks Hospice.

Former submariner David Barnham of Coleford said he wanted something to challenge him mentally and physically as he approaches his 50th birthday.

The 131-mile trek along the Welsh border will finish near Widnes in Lancashire and he will carry everything he needs including clothing and camping gear.

He said: “Great Oaks hospice is a fantastic facility that supports the community.

“They are an organisation that understands every penny counts.

“So if you can spare a few pennies or a few pounds it will be greatly received and put to great use.”

Mr Barnham will start his walk from the hospice on The Gorse on Monday, October 3.
