FOREST MP Mark Harper has brought in changes which mean new immigrants get quizzed on Brunel instead of benefits.

A new 'Life in the UK' test which comes into force in March focuses on British culture and history.

It is part of the Government's reforms to reduce net migration.

The Government is also said to be considering adverts to discourage tens of thousands of Bulgarians and Romanians coming here when restrictions are lifted.

The modified 45-minute exam will cover events and people who have contributed to making Britain great and covers topics such as sport and culture.

Minister for Immigration Mr Harper said: 'We've stripped out mundane information about water meters, how to find train timetables, and using the internet. The new book rightly focuses on values and principles at the heart of being British. Instead of telling people how to claim benefits it encourages participation in British life."
