LYDNEY'S model village has closed after failing to secure a long lease from its aristocratic landlord.

A message on the website says the miniature attraction has closed its doors because of lease problems with Lydney Park Estate.

The estate has been run by painter Rupert Bathurst, the 4th Viscount Bledisloe, since the death of his father Christopher last year.

The village opened at the Lydney Park Estate a decade ago with models of Forest landmarks.

New owners took over in 2008 when Londoner Jane O'Brien was put in charge.

She added new models and attractions such as crazy golf.

But during the Christmas holidays a notice appeared on the website stating: "The model village will regretfully close on December 23 2010 as we were unable to secure a long-term lease from the landlord.

"We would like to thank you for all your support."

Lydney Park Estate manager Robert Franklin refused to comment on the issue.

But local councillor and tourist operator Alastair Fraser said: "It is very disappointing to see the closure of a tourist attraction."

Jane O'Brien was unavailable for comment.
