EXPERTS warn a rise in rat numbers could see hoards of rodents invading homes this Christmas.

The rising population is believed to be down to the milder weather experience this autumn.

Mark Oliver, of AM Pests based in Ruspidge, said: "When it comes to pests prevention rather than cure is always the best policy.

"There's been an increase in rats and squirrels this year. It's down to the warmer weather and the availability of food.

"The main thing that attracts rats is easily accessible food source. That's all they are after. To prevent them coming onto your property I would suggest placing bird food out of reach of rats either hanging from a tree or a pole."
