THE M48 Severn Bridge was temporarily closed in both directions on Monday, April 6 due to a medical emergency, which resulted in one person transported to hospital.
At 15.21, National Highways closed the bridge and advised motorists to use the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge as a diversion. Meanwhile, traffic was at a standstill between Junction 2 A466 Wye Valley Link Road, Chepstow, to Junction 1 A403, Aust. Congestion was heavy to the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge Westbound due to the diversion.
Avon and Somerset Police led the response, with South Western Ambulance Service, Traffic Officers and National Highways area team crews also at the scene. The Severn Bridge reopened in both directions at 16.14.
A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) said: “We were called at 14.46 on Monday, April 6 to an incident on the Severn Bridge. We sent one double-crewed land ambulance, an air ambulance, an operations officer, a rapid response vehicle, a critical care car, and the hazardous area response team to the scene. We conveyed one patient by land ambulance to Bristol Royal Infirmary.”
While the roads returned back to normal flow following this incident, National Highways reminded drivers of upcoming plans which may see delays.
The M48 Severn Bridge will see lane closures as planned roadworks will close lanes one and two between 8pm and 6am from Monday, April 13 to Wednesday, April 15. This will affect the M48 westbound between the M4 and Junction 1. Residents are advised to plan their journey for this time in advance.
