CHURCH organist Joyce Morse plans to round off her 100th birthday celebrations by playing the organ at May Hill Methodist Church on New year’s Eve.

Joyce, who as born on December 29, 1917, has been playing both organ and piano in a number of Methodist and other churches for around 85 years.

On Sunday, December 31, she will take her place at the keyboard as usual for morning worship.

Joyce has no plans to relinquish the keyboards anytime soon.

She said: “We have a loyal congregation and I hope to play for many more years yet. I don’t feel 100. I eat plain, simple food and take each day as it comes.

“I count my blessings, so I just keep calm and carry on. The Church is part of village life which means everyone is welcome.”

Preacher for this landmark service is County Methodist Superintendent the Revd Dr James Tebbutt who said: “Joyce’s story is amazing It says so much about living a life of faith, and continuing to offer our particular gifts".

Joyce, a former headteacher at Longhope Infants and Junior School was the organist at Longhope Baptist Church and later transferred to May Hill Methodist Chapel in the 1980s when their previous organist Russ Green retired.

The Minister at May Hill Methodist Church, the Rev Denise Hargreaves, said: “Joyce is an amazing woman and has a heart of gold. She encourages us to sing up and keep up with the music.

“God bless you Joyce. Many Congratulations on your 100th Birthday.”
