PENSIONER Sid Gresty's neighbour and ambulance staff saved the day when he was marooned in his Lydney home by snow.

The 96-year-old needed vital dialysis treatment in Gloucester but the snow threatened to put a halt to his journey.

Patient transport staff had to park their ambulance a quarter of a mile away at Lydney's old bus station as the hill toward Sid's house in Kimberley Close was so treacherous.

"There were about four inches of rutted snow to get through so getting back to the ambulance was an absolute marathon," said Sid.

"Three of them had come up here with blankets and they wrapped me up and we set off.

"It was a huge effort just to keep the wheelchair in line and it was a bit hairy as we couldn't see where any of the kerbs were.

"We got to the hospital but as I was late I could only have three hours of dialysis instead of four.

"But it was absolutely vital that I got there – it couldn't wait until Monday."
