A FOOTBRIDGE should be built at Lydney railway station following the death of a woman there last week, believes a councillor.
The road to the station was blocked off by police last Thursday as investigations took place into how the woman found herself on the track when an oncoming service rushed through.
People who were at the station said they believed she had been struck by a non-stop train as she walked across the tracks.
The incident was reported at 12.46pm last Thursday and a British Transport Police statement said: “Officers were called to Lydney Station at 12.46pm following reports of a casualty on the tracks.
“Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person has been pronounced dead at the scene.
“Officers are now working to identify the person and inform their family.
“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
Now the Forest of Dean District Council’s chairman Cllr James Bevan believes it is time for a footbridge to be built at the station to try and reduce the incidents of people taking a chance and dashing around the level crossing gates in order to catch trains to Chepstow and Wales.
