FIREFIGHTERS are still at the scene of a major blaze at Bendall's scrap yard in Lydney.
Two crews were still damping down on Friday after the fire which broke out at about 10.40am on Thursday.
The blaze sent plumes of black smoke over Lydney which could be seen for miles around.
Ten fire engines, two aerial appliances, a high volume pump, the environmental protection unit and water carrier were at the scene.
Incident Commander Steve Bateman said: "This was a well developed fire on an industrial site. The pile of cars measures 30 metres by 60 metres by 10 metres high.
"Local fire crews have been tackling the fire alongside colleagues from Stroud, Cheltenham, Cirencester, Gloucester and South Wales."
The Health Protection Agency advised residents in areas affected by the smoke to stay indoors and keep their doors and windows closed.
