GFA Challenge Trophy

Semi-Final

Tuffley Rovers 2

Lydney Town 0

TWO first half goals gave County League Tuffley Rovers a smooth passage into the Challenge Trophy final on Tuesday night.

Their opponents, from a higher division, had few complaints.

Lydney manager Neil Hook said: "I don't think there's an awful lot between the County League and our division, but they were really up for it and we weren't. We've gone off the boil and I don't know why.

"We had a full strength squad apart from Ross Lindsay, so it's disappointing.

"Too many of our players just aren't firing right now.

"I thought after we beat Purton 5-0 last week we'd turned the corner, but Saturday was disappointing and so was this."

Lydney had chances to take the lead, including a Nial Halford header, but Tuffley generally dominated throughout.

Hook added: "We've got to pick ourselves up and try and finish high enough to get promoted.

"At the start of the season we wanted a top nine finish, which we're guaranteed.

"We set our standards high, but we played so well up until Christmas."

Ellwood still have to visit Shortwood United in the quarter-finals of the Challenge Trophy.

The winners of that tie, scheduled for March 15, will play Bitton at home in the other semi-final.
