LOCALS are being invited to meet up for a chat about current affairs including the state of the environment at a series of monthly pop-up cafe events across the Forest.

The One Planet Cafe initiative, which is organised by the Forest of Dean Green Party, is back this month following a summer break.

The monthly meet-ups offer locals a chance to get together and discuss the issues of the day, such as the latest news, local projects and services and environmental concerns.

All are welcome to attend the cafes, not just green party members.

The events have so far been a success, with attendance “very encouraging” and an enthusiastic response from the public.

The first event was held at Lydney’s Hips Social back in April, with many dropping in for “interesting and diverse” conversations about topics such as community gardens, building with wood and going plastic free.

This month’s event will be held at the Dean Heritage Centre Cafe in Soudley next Tuesday (September 6) between 10am and 12pm.

“Nothing is on or off the agenda”, said organiser and local councillor Jackie Dale.

“The topics discussed depend on who comes along on the day, perhaps what’s in the news and what they feel like talking about.

“Previous topics have included availability of affordable homes, road closures and water quality in our rivers.”

The events are held on the first Tuesday of every month at cafes across the district, including Lydney’s Taurus Crafts, The Coffee Shop in Bream and Scoff’s Coffee House in Coleford.

The group encourage attendees to bring books to swap, and there are also books and toys to keep young children entertained.

The cafe is one of several social gatherings in the Forest of Dean Green Party’s calender.

The group also hosts monthly ‘Green Drinks’ at pubs and venues across the Forest, often featuring guest speakers but mainly giving locals - again not just party members - the opportunity to network and discuss “green issues and social injustice”.

Fellow organiser Alison Bruce added: “We look forward to welcoming people to the cafe at the Heritage centre on September 6th, we bring books and toys for young children and a selection of interesting books for swapping”.
