TRAINS were halted and emergency services called when a Coleford man's body was found on the railway tracks at Lydney.

Terence Hawkins was found near the town's railway station on Friday morning after he was struck by the 6.13am Cardiff Central to Cheltenham Spa service.

The 67-year-old's green Rover car was found in the station car park by police officers and was later removed.

Police say they are not treating the man's death as suspicious.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: "British Transport Police officers were called to the line close to Lydney rail station on Friday following a report of a body on the line. BTP officers and colleagues from Gloucestershire Police atte- nded the incident, which was reported at 7.02am and is being treated as non-suspicious.

"Paramedics also attended and pronounced the body, believed to be that of a 67-year-old man from Coleford, dead at the scene.

"The railway lines were handed back to Network Rail at 9.05am."

The Gloucester coroner has opened an inquest into the death of Mr Hawkins which has been adjourned for a date to be fixed.
