THE GPJ Multi-sports event was tinged with sadness because it is the last competition to be organised by the Schools Sports Partnership.
The event attracted 37 teams from 33 schools across the district. They competed in mini-tennis, uni-hoc, kwik cricket, standing long jump, indoor javelin and relay – with the two large school groups also playing mini-volleyball.
Five secondary schools hosted the early rounds with the finals being held at Heywood School.
In total, approximately 450 pupils took part, officiated by around 50 young leaders from local secondary schools.
In a repeat of the 2010 bowl final for the smallest schools, Huntley emerged victorious over Pillowell in a tense and close final, sealing victory in the last event, the relay.
Also retaining their title as plate champions were Hopebrook, with a more convincing win over Steam Mills.
In the larger schools shield Bream once again showed their class with a clean sweep over Lydbrook.
The cup final for the larger schools saw two GPJ heavyweights go head to head. Coalway – who have won the event more than any other team – were matched against longstanding rivals Woolaston. Woolaston won the final 9-6.
Although the School Sports Partnership is being phased out, the multi-sports event could continue next year under the watchful eye of a school games organiser who will be based at Dene Magna.
