HARTPURY cyclists have raised £15,000 for a Gloucestershire inclusive sports charity after completing a gruelling 180-mile ride across Wales and England.

The team, made up of staff, students, governors, alumni and supporters from Hartpury University and Hartpury College, spent three days in the saddle to raise money for Goals Beyond Grass.

Riders set off from St Davids before travelling to Carmarthen, then continuing through Abergavenny and on to their final destination in Gloucestershire.

The route included the Tywi Valley Path, part of National Cycle Network Route 47, with the challenge receiving support from sponsors and volunteers along the way.

Goals Beyond Grass works to reduce social isolation by providing inclusive cycling, football and community activities for people with disabilities.

Brian Dix, founder and chief executive of Goals Beyond Grass, said the challenge would have a significant impact on the charity’s work.

He said: “We’re so inspired by what the team has achieved. It’s an amazing feat of endurance, and the money and awareness this challenge has raised will make a real difference to our charity.

“The funds will enable us to deliver another 22 weeks of our inclusive cycling sessions, helping more than 3,000 people with disabilities across Gloucestershire to access cycling and enjoy all the benefits it brings.”

Councillor Hazel Evans, Carmarthenshire County Council cabinet member for regeneration, leisure, culture and tourism, also congratulated those involved.

She said the challenge demonstrated the positive impact sport and physical activity could have in bringing communities together while supporting worthwhile causes.

Although the 180-mile challenge has now been completed, supporters can still donate to Goals Beyond Grass online.

Funds will support opportunities for disabled people to take part in accessible sport and enjoy its social benefits.
