A CHELTENHAM Festival racegoer, Matilda Been, stole the style spotlight on Ladies’ Day with a hat that truly went the extra mile.
The bespoke design, commissioned by Great Western Railway, featured a miniature moving train circling the brim, celebrating the thousands of festivalgoers travelling to Cheltenham by rail.
Wearing the eye-catching piece on Wednesday, March 11, Been turned heads as she walked the course at Cheltenham Racecourse, combining racing glamour with a playful nod to rail travel.
Speaking about the unusual design, Been said the hat was “quite heavy” but added it was already “getting a lot of attention” from fellow racegoers and passers-by.
The hat was part of Ladies’ Day, the festival’s fashion-focused day, when bold and inventive headwear is almost as anticipated as the racing itself.
While clearly designed more for style than practicality, the hat celebrated the thousands who make their way to the festival each year on GWR services, with extra trains running to accommodate the surge in passengers.
