VANDALS have launched a spate of graffiti attacks on the walls of Newent.Newent councillor Len Lawton says the writing is in Polish and has become difficult to remove.

The town, which appears in the Doomsday Book, has historic landmarks such as Market House and St Mary’s Church.

But now the daubings have appeared on the walls of buildings and reported to police to investigate.

Cllr Lawton said the attacks have happened at a car park in town, at a building on Court Lane and one in Market Square.

He added: “It is written in Polish and we have managed to clean half of it up.”

However, attempts by councillor Lawton to get the district authority to clean the graffiti off the walls of the buildings have so far come to nothing.

“I have asked one department which has the equipment and not the chemicals and another which has the chemicals and not the equipment. I wish they would just talk to each other,” he said.

“If the district council do not take this up, I will be screaming at them,” he added.
