A Gloucestershire nurse has been given a prestigious Award of Merit at the Royal College of Nursing’s annual Congress in Liverpool.
Matthew Stewart received the prestigious Royal College of Nursing Award (RCN) of Merit, which is the highest honour awarded by the RCN.
NHS Gloucestershire said Matthew’s dedication to patient care, clinical excellence, and voluntary service has made a remarkable impact within its hospitals and across the nursing profession.
Matthew Stewart said: "It’s a real honour to be given such a high award within the college and something that I never thought I would get. I was just doing my job, raising concerns as an RCN Steward on an issue that has affected so many of my nursing colleagues. I want to thank all those that have supported me on this journey."
The awards celebrate the best in nursing, by presenting Fellowships, Honorary Fellowships and Awards of Merit to those who have given an outstanding contribution to nursing. There are also honours for the Learning Representative, Safety Representative and Steward of the Year.
Susan Masters, RCN Regional Director said: “I am delighted for Matthew. The work he has undertaken to lobby on the issue of corridor care has been amazing. Matthew has stepped up to represent not only his immediate colleagues and community but nursing on a national scale.
“His work has, and is, making a real difference and we are very proud of him. This award is absolutely deserved, and we are delighted he has been recognised in this way.”
The Gloucestershire nurse was also praised on social media, with commenters expressing their congratulations. One poster said: “Top Man, top award, perfect match.”
Matthew was given the award on the first day of RCN Congress, which is where RCN members meet to inform, learn, develop and share nursing practice.
