FAMILIES across the Forest of Dean are set to benefit from a wide range of free winter activities as the Holiday Activities and Food programme returns for the festive season.
Running between Saturday, December 20 and Sunday, January 4, the scheme offers children on benefits related free school meals access to free activity sessions and nutritious meals.
Additional grant funding through the Holiday Activities Programme means many sessions are also available to all young people in Gloucestershire.
In the Forest, the programme is delivered with the support of the Forest Voluntary Action Forum. The forum works closely with providers across the region, helping families access sessions close to home in a district where transport can often be a challenge.
The forum plays a major role in community life, offering support and development advice for local groups, training opportunities, information services, networking meetings and volunteer recruitment.
Its work also includes long running community projects such as the Forest of Dean Youth Association, Holiday Activity Campaigns, the Forest Compass Directory and Walking with Wheels.
This winter, families will be able to book drama and science workshops, art and music sessions, sports and games, indoor and outdoor activities and ticketed attractions such as ice skating and pantomimes.
Bookings are open through the county’s Family Hubs system, where parents can create an account, add children’s profiles and update emergency contact details.
Cllr Linda Cohen, cabinet member for education and skills, said: “Families have told us how much they value the Holiday Activities and Food programme, so I am delighted it is returning this winter to offer free, fun activities for children and young people. It is a fantastic way to stay active, try new things and create lasting memories.”
Forest families who need help choosing or booking sessions can also speak to their dedicated HAF Community Connector for support throughout the holiday period.
