A road marking spelling mistake has caused raised eyebrows in the town of Cinderford and kicked off a friendly rivalry between two Forest towns to see which has the worst spelling record.

Last week Cinderford residents were amused to find the recently painted charging bays in Station Street were for “electric vehicels only” and now it seems Lydney is following suite.

Reform UK Councillor Ray Donaghue, who represents the Cinderford at Gloucestershire County Council, reported the issue on Monday, July 27 and the road marking was repainted the following day.

“It’s one of those things and it’s made us laugh,” he said.

“I’ve seen a ‘Worchester’ sign and ‘no parkeng’ before but I think ‘electric vehicels only’ is a new one.

“It made me think of the ‘no regerts’ tattoo phenomenon.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Mark Harris (Cirencester North with Ermin), who is the cabinet member for highways at Gloucestershire County Council, said the misspelling has now been corrected.

“We thank Cllr Donaghue for bringing this to our attention,” he said.

“As soon as the error was realised, we contacted our contractors who fixed the issue on Tuesday morning.”

Shire Hall is responsible for maintaining around 3,200 miles of roads across the county.

Now, another “funny” road marking mistake in the Forest of Dean has ignited a friendly rivalry between two market towns as a different mistake was found in the spelling for electric vehicle spaces in Lydney.

Lydney Mayor Tasha Saunders saw the funny side of it while also making Gloucestershire Highways aware of the issue.

“Well it seems that anything Cinderford can do, we can too,” she said.

“Thanks to a resident who sent these photos to me.I have checked and can confirm they are not actually AI,” she joked. “It does actually say ‘electirc vehicles’

“It looks like we are also taking part in the Forest spelling contest.”

“I believe they were done earlier in the week and, from what I can gather, they were originally correct," she said.

"It seems when the Cinderford mistake became apparent and they fixed that one, they must have come out to Lydney and altered the spelling there but actually made it wrong."

Cllr Saunders added that the issue had “made us laugh”.

“Yes, it is a bit of a waste of money and they have to go and fix it. But you know, in the grand scheme of life…

“My spelling mistakes are legendary, so I swear half of Lydney probably think I did that job!”

Reform UK Councillor Donaghue joked saying he thinks Cinderford has been “outdone by Lydney this time!”

“I wonder if Coleford is in the running!

“It’s really made us chuckle. Clearly it’s a mistake and not something you want to happen all.the time as it costs money.

“However, I know for a fact the guys and girls in highways are working really hard especially in this heat so I think we can all see the funny side.”

Gloucestershire County Council has been approached for further comment.
