AN IMPORTANT stretch of road will remain closed until summer next year after engineers found more problems.

The B4234 was completely closed near Whitecroft in January for repairs following a landslip in November 2023 which reduced the road to one lane.

Gloucestershire County Council says that inspections and monitoring has revealed further areas of movement along the B4234 which need to be stabilised.

While work was underway on the original 51 yards of roads affected by the landslip, two further areas requiring stabilisation were identified.

The council says dealing with the problems now will avoid having to reopen the road under temporary two-way traffic signals at multiple locations.

The council’s Cabinet member responsible for highways, Cllr Mark Harris (LibDem, Cirencester North) said: “I know this closure has been frustrating for residents, businesses, and everyone who relies on this route, and I'd like to thank you for your continued patience.

“Since work began earlier this year to repair the original landslip, further inspections have identified additional areas of ground movement that must be stabilised before we can safely reopen the road.

“We have seen accelerated increases in cracking and subsidence at two locations near the existing work site which can't be ignored.

“Because our specialist teams and equipment are already on site, we’re taking the opportunity to complete all the necessary repairs as part of the co-ordinated programme of work.

“This means expending the current closure till summer 2027.

“It will help avoid repeated disruption, temporary traffic signals, and the need for future major closures.

“More importantly, it will deliver a safer, stronger, and more resilient road for the long term.

“We understand the impact, this is having on local journeys, and we're committed to completing these essential works as safely and as efficiently as possible.”
