LOCAL sporting heroes Charlotte Dujardin and Andy Lewis were named in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List.
Lydney paratriathlete Lewis said he was delighted for his MBE for services to triathlon and happy to have put the Severnside town on the map.
“It was the icing on the cake for a great year for me,” he said.
“I’m really happy to have helped put Lydney on the map. I had to keep correcting people who thought I was from Gloucester but the message that I’m from Lydney finally got through.”
“People told me that because of my gold medal I’d probably be in line for an MBE but it wasn’t something I hunted,” he said.
“I thought if it happens, it happens. But It was really good to get.”
Newent-based rider Charlotte Dujardin received a CBE for services to equestrianism.
She has become the face of British dressage since her double gold haul at the London 2012 Olympics and is the only ever rider to hold every individual elite honour in the sport at the same time.
After winning the team and individual dressage medals in London, Dujardin went on to win gold in both the freestyle and special individual dressage classes at the European Championships in 2013, before retaining both titles last year.
She retained the gold medal in the individual dressage in Rio last year.
