RESIDENTS across the Forest of Dean can now recycle even more plastic at the kerbside, thanks to a major expansion of the district’s weekly collection service.

From this week, plastic pots, tubs and trays such as yoghurt pots, margarine tubs, fruit punnets and meat trays can be added to green recycling boxes alongside plastic bottles, tins, cans and foil.

The change means a wider range of household plastics can now be picked up, with the district aiming to boost recycling rates and reduce waste going to incineration.

Cllr Andy Moore, Deputy Leader and cabinet member for waste and recycling at Forest of Dean District Council, said: “We know that our residents are eager to recycle more, so we’re delighted to be expanding the range of materials we can now collect at the kerbside.

“Residents of the Forest of Dean are keen recyclers. The district ranks in the top 15 percent of English local authorities for waste and recycling performance. This move will help us recycle even more and further reduce our environmental impact.”

While some households have already been putting out mixed plastics with their bottles, the council said this was previously collected and recycled without a formal rollout.

Cllr Moore added: “While we’re pleased to offer more recycling options, we also encourage everyone to think about how they can reduce the amount of plastic they use in the first place. Recycling is important, but reducing our reliance on plastic is even better for the environment.”

Plastic items must be rinsed before being put in the recycling box. To prevent lighter plastics from blowing away, residents are advised to place another recycling box on top.

Residents can find full recycling information on the back of their annual waste collection calendar or by contacting the District Council directly.
